The PLAB 2 visa: visitor route, refusals and family

Published by GK's PLAB 2 Study Centre · Last fact-check: 4 August 2026

PLAB 2 takes place in Manchester and is permitted under the UK Standard Visitor route. Apply on GOV.UK and include the GMC Online booking confirmation. Visa costs and decision times vary, so check the current details for your local application centre on GOV.UK.

Evidence for the application

GOV.UK specifically permits a visitor to take the PLAB test for a stay of up to 6 months, and says the applicant needs a GMC letter confirming test registration. For PLAB 2, use the booking confirmation showing your name, exam date and Manchester test location. The dates on the form, cover letter, travel plan and accommodation evidence should agree. If you plan to stay longer for preparation or tourism, explain the purpose and budget for that time.

The Standard Visitor rules require enough money for the applicant and any dependants, plus the return or onward trip. Bank statements should support the stated cost of flights, accommodation, food, local transport and contingencies without UK work.

GOV.UK publishes no fixed minimum balance for a Standard Visitor application. Opening balance, regular income, trip cost and closing buffer should make sense together.

The Home Office's visitor supporting-documents guide names employment, study and ongoing self-employment evidence in the home country. An employer letter can state your role, salary, length of service and approved leave. A university letter can confirm enrolment and leave. Business registration and recent invoices can show continuing work. Family responsibilities, property or a planned return to clinical duties can add context when documents support them. Your proposed return date should fit the exam and approved leave.

Gaps that can lead to refusal

Documents need to explain the money, any sponsor, the length of the trip and earlier immigration decisions. A large folder does not cure a contradiction.

A bank statement may show enough money on its final page but give no account of a large transfer made 10 days earlier. Evidence of origin could be a payslip and payroll entry, sale agreement and receipt, fixed-deposit maturity record, or a sponsor explanation matched to the sponsor's statement. If a parent, sibling or spouse will pay, identify what that person will cover, prove the relationship and show that the sponsor can support the trip and their own household. GOV.UK asks for evidence of the sponsor's funds, legal UK status where relevant and relationship to the visitor. A sponsorship letter on its own does not show that the money is available.

A form that declares a 12-day visit should not be paired with 30 nights of accommodation, a different arrival date in the cover letter or a budget calculated for one week. Use the same arrival, accommodation, PLAB 2 and departure dates throughout. Each extra day needs funding and a stated purpose. The application form also asks about immigration history, so disclose an earlier refusal accurately and address the concerns in the refusal letter with the relevant evidence. Explain any change in bank balance, sponsor or itinerary.

Travelling with a spouse or children

There is no separate PLAB spouse visa and no PLAB-specific bar on family travel. Every family member must make a separate Standard Visitor application, pay the current fee and attend their own visa appointment. A parent can complete an application for a child who cannot complete it. The applications can cross-reference one another using names, passport numbers, application references, shared travel dates and the same accommodation.

Keep the purposes clear. Your purpose is to sit PLAB 2 on the GMC date. A spouse or child is accompanying you during the visit, with tourism or family time described only where it is planned. Each person still has to satisfy the Visitor rules. One approval does not automatically produce the others.

Money must cover the group. A budget for 2 adults and 1 child should include three sets of travel costs, suitable accommodation, daily living costs, local transport and a contingency. Where one person funds everyone, the sponsor letter should list each traveller and the amount or categories covered. Marriage and birth certificates can establish relationships, with certified translations where documents are not in English or Welsh. If only one parent travels with a child, the application should clearly document parental responsibility and the other parent's consent where applicable.

A spouse cannot take paid or unpaid work for a UK company while visiting. GOV.UK lists work among the activities a Standard Visitor cannot undertake, and accompanying someone taking PLAB creates no exception. A spouse who works outside the UK should describe approved leave and the planned return. That evidence can support both the family plan and the reason to leave after the exam.

Pregnancy does not prevent a Standard Visitor application or a PLAB 2 sitting. The UK Civil Aviation Authority treats flight fitness as a separate question.

The application still needs evidence of the exam purpose, adequate funds and your planned departure. Health and transport planning need more attention. The UK Civil Aviation Authority says most airlines require medical confirmation after 28 weeks and commonly restrict travel later in pregnancy, but the operating airline's current rules control the flight. Check both outward and return dates, as the gestational age will be different.

A visitor visa does not include the immigration health surcharge. Medical cover therefore needs a separate line in the family budget.

GOV.UK says visitors generally pay for NHS care when they use it unless the service or person is exempt. Maternity care that is immediately necessary is not withheld because payment has not been made, but it can still be chargeable. Travel insurance should be checked for pregnancy limits, existing conditions and planned gestational dates rather than bought from the cheapest comparison result.

Timing the application against the booking

The visa file needs firm exam evidence, so secure the exam first. You need a valid PLAB 1 pass to view and book a PLAB 2 place in GMC Online. Book PLAB 2, download the confirmation, prepare the evidence and apply within GOV.UK's permitted window. Check the current decision estimate for your country and application centre, but do not treat it as a guarantee. The six-week PLAB 2 preparation plan can run alongside the visa process without an early move to Manchester.

If the visa remains undecided, the GMC booking does not move automatically. Changing dates requires cancelling the existing place before booking another available one. The GMC cancellation table uses a sliding scale: cancelling more than 42 days before PLAB 2 costs 10% of the test fee, with higher deductions closer to the exam. The GMC says it may consider refunding the cancellation fee where exceptional circumstances prevent a candidate from attending, and its PLAB 2 guide sets out that process. Whether a visa refusal qualifies is the GMC's decision on the evidence, so a refund should never be assumed in the budget.

If the application is refused

Read the refusal letter against the documents that were submitted. GOV.UK says the decision letter states whether there is a right of appeal or administrative review. The available next step depends on the decision and the facts of the case.

If making a new application, address each refusal point and disclose the earlier refusal accurately. State changed dates and amounts clearly. Where the letter raises deception, document authenticity, a ban or another serious issue, regulated immigration advice may be appropriate before another application.

You can rebook PLAB 2 if you remain eligible and a date is available. PLAB 2 must be passed within 2 years of the PLAB 1 pass date. The pass date is the day PLAB 1 was taken, not the results date. Keep that limit in view when deciding what to do after a refusal.

The costs line for budgeting

The visa line should use the current Standard Visitor fee shown by GOV.UK, not a saved 2025 or 2026 screenshot. Each accompanying spouse or child has a separate application fee. The same worksheet should include biometrics-centre travel where applicable, document translation, flights, accommodation, Manchester transport, meals, travel insurance and a contingency for changes. Country-specific exchange rates and flight prices can move the total far more than a document cost. Separate cost guides set out the wider local budget for doctors travelling from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Egypt and Turkey. The academy versus self-study comparison shows how a longer UK stay changes accommodation and living costs. For a family of 3, the final calculation should multiply every per-person item by three and leave shared items, such as one room, at the actual quoted amount.

Questions candidates actually ask

Can I get a UK visa to write my PLAB 2 exam if I am pregnant?

Yes. Pregnancy does not prevent you from applying for a Standard Visitor visa or sitting PLAB 2, but you must still meet the visitor requirements. Check the airline's pregnancy rules and the potential cost of NHS care during the visit before travelling.

Can my husband or wife come with me for PLAB 2?

Yes. A husband or wife can apply for a separate Standard Visitor visa to accompany you, and the two applications can refer to each other. The evidence must show enough money for both visitors, and a spouse cannot work in the UK as a visitor.

What documents does the PLAB 2 visa need?

The central document is the GMC letter or booking confirmation showing the PLAB 2 date. The application should also include evidence of accessible funds, accommodation and travel plans, employment or study at home, and any sponsor's identity, relationship and financial support.
