PLAB 2 from Turkey: preparing locally before Manchester

Published by GK's PLAB 2 Study Centre · Last fact-check: 4 August 2026

A course advertised in Turkey prepares you for PLAB 2. The exam itself remains Manchester-only.

You can complete most of the spoken preparation in Turkey and reserve the UK trip for the exam. The fixed 2026 charges are £283 for PLAB 1, £1,036 for PLAB 2 and £135 for a six-month Standard Visitor visa, followed by flights and a UK stay. At an illustrative rate of approximately ₺55 per pound, mid-2026, the planning range used here is about ₺180,000 to ₺280,000.

Build the lira budget in pounds first

The three official charges total £1,454, approximately ₺79,970 at the stated planning rate. The remaining ₺100,000 to ₺200,000 depends mainly on preparation, travel, accommodation and how much contingency the candidate keeps.

Item 2026 planning figure Illustrative TRY
PLAB 1 fee from 1 April 2026 £283 ₺15,565
PLAB 2 fee from 1 April 2026 £1,036 ₺56,980
Six-month Standard Visitor visa from 8 April 2026 £135 ₺7,425
Return flight from Turkey Planning allowance ₺15,000 to ₺30,000
Manchester accommodation, food and local travel Planning allowance ₺40,000 to ₺80,000
PLAB 2 preparation and mocks Planning allowance ₺15,000 to ₺45,000
English test, documents, card costs and contingency Planning allowance ₺30,000 to ₺45,000
Estimated total Rounded range ₺180,000 to ₺280,000

The variable rows are planning allowances, not quoted market prices. Home study and a short shared stay approach the lower end. A longer stay, paid course and private room push the figure upwards.

PLAB 1 has international test centres, with live availability shown during booking.

PLAB 2 is delivered only in Manchester, including for doctors who trained with an academy in Turkey. The useful spreadsheet is therefore denominated in pounds. Refresh the lira column near each payment, because ₺55 is an illustrative mid-2026 rate rather than a live quote.

What a Turkey-based course can and cannot do

UK-style PLAB 2 teaching is available in Turkey. Aspire's Turkish batches are one known example, not a ranking or endorsement. Verify the current batch details before paying.

A local course can provide repeated English speaking practice, peer circuits and feedback without several extra weeks of Manchester rent. The course phase also avoids visitor-visa dependency. A doctor can continue a Turkish hospital or university post while preparing, then reserve the UK trip for the exam window.

It cannot solve the final border crossing. The PLAB 2 booking, Standard Visitor application, flight and Manchester accommodation remain the candidate's responsibility. Advertising that says a course is "in Turkey" must never be read as saying that the GMC exam is in Turkey.

The academy versus self-study guide gives the full cost comparison. Every Turkish provider should also answer the same 6 questions in writing:

  1. What is the batch size, and how many minutes does each candidate speak daily?
  2. Does each station receive feedback across the 3 GMC domains?
  3. Who teaches the batch, and how recent is each tutor's PLAB 2 experience?
  4. How many full 16-station mocks and written reports are included?
  5. What are the written cancellation, transfer and refund terms?
  6. Is accommodation optional, with every cost itemised?

A provider that cannot state speaking time or refund terms has not supplied enough information. Pass-rate claims need denominators, attempt histories and batch dates before they support a comparison.

Comparing PLAB with TUS

TUS and PLAB select for different outcomes. TUS centrally ranks candidates for Turkish specialty places, so the candidate competes against a cohort for available seats. PLAB tests whether an international graduate meets a UK registration standard. Passing PLAB does not award a specialty place, an NHS job or even GMC registration automatically.

That structural difference matters more than a casual claim that one exam is harder. Current TUS ratios, quotas and placement results should be checked in ÖSYM's latest guide and tables. Older forum numbers should not drive a 2026 decision.

TUS directly addresses the goal of staying in Turkey and competing for a Turkish specialty place. It also avoids the pound exposure and immigration file attached to the ₺180,000 to ₺280,000 PLAB plan. PLAB addresses a different goal: UK registration and applications for NHS work in English. If you would reject an NHS service post and accept only immediate UK specialty training, the 2026 recruitment figures do not support paying for PLAB on that assumption. A PLAB route may involve GMC registration, broad applications for service employment, NHS experience and a later training decision. It does not guarantee entry to GP, IMT or another programme.

The visa file from Turkey

GOV.UK specifically permits a visit of up to 6 months to take PLAB, with a GMC letter confirming test registration. The PLAB 2 booking confirmation establishes the purpose of the trip. The Manchester venue, exam date, proposed arrival, accommodation and return date should agree across the file. A course certificate cannot replace GMC booking evidence.

The application must also show that the trip is affordable without UK work. If another person pays, identify the sponsor, prove the relationship and show that the money is available. A recent transfer still needs its origin explained.

Evidence of continuing duties in Turkey can support the planned return. A hospital or university letter may state the role, salary, length of service, approved leave and expected return date. Recent salary credits, payroll evidence or genuine SGK service records linked to the applicant's T.C. identity can support the same account. None guarantees a visa, and irrelevant documents do not repair an inconsistent itinerary. The Home Office's visitor supporting-documents guide explains the types of home-country and sponsor evidence that may assist.

Complete the Turkey-based course or self-study phase, secure a PLAB 2 date after a valid PLAB 1 pass, then download the confirmation before applying. Processing times vary, so no academy timetable should be treated as a visa promise. The PLAB 2 visa guide covers the application sequence, family applications and what to do after a refusal.

Paying in pounds from Turkey

Before a £1,036 booking attempt, the card needs international online transactions enabled, a sufficient limit and headroom for the issuer's foreign-currency treatment. The candidate should confirm those settings with the bank, keep the GMC receipt and record the final lira debit.

The budget should remain in pounds because the GMC fee will not wait for a more favourable rate. Once a fixed liability and payment date are known, securing the required pound amount early or in stages can reduce the risk that the lira budget falls short. The remaining lira estimate can be updated at the rate available when variable costs are paid. This is planning guidance, not a forecast of sterling or the lira.

GK's PLAB 2 Study Centre's records for the 12 months to August 2026 show an 89.7% success rate for Turkish payment attempts. That figure describes this platform's checkouts, not the GMC payment system or every Turkish card. Confirm international access and the available limit with your issuer before attempting the GMC charge.

How UK training changed in 2026

The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 received Royal Assent on 5 March 2026 and came into force on 6 March. Prioritisation applied at the offer stage for 2026 starts, while for 2027 starts it extends from shortlisting through to offers.

The first results were severe for applicants outside the priority groups. NHS England reported that priority candidates received 98% of CT1 and ST1 posts in 2026, up from 72% in 2025. Non-prioritised acceptances fell from 2,168 to 163.

Those figures do not ban Turkish doctors from registration, NHS employment or every future training post. They do make a Turkey-to-immediate-training plan unsafe. A candidate should assume service employment first and apply for locally employed doctor, clinical fellow, trust grade and SHO-equivalent roles. A PLAB pass guarantees none.

The full guide to IMG training prioritisation explains the statutory priority groups and the difference between service work and training. It should be read before borrowing against the ₺180,000 to ₺280,000 budget. A plan that becomes unaffordable without a GP or IMT place within 12 months does not fit the 2026 evidence.

Preparing from Turkey

For doctors whose medical education and ward communication have taken place mainly in Turkish, the largest adaptation is often converting sound clinical decisions into concise patient-facing English. The clinical knowledge still matters, but silent rereading cannot show whether an explanation runs past 8 minutes, misses a patient's concern or uses language that a role player cannot follow.

Daily practice needs a timed spoken station and direct feedback. Repeat the station when the correction changes what you say or do. Across the week, cover all three scoring domains and leave time for a full 16-station circuit.

Turkey stays on UTC+3. It is 2 hours ahead of the UK during British summer time and 3 hours ahead when the UK returns to GMT, so an evening UK study group remains workable without moving to Manchester early. A candidate with hospital shifts can reserve a fixed 45-minute speaking slot and use weekends for longer circuits.

AI patient practice at GK's PLAB 2 Study Centre provides voice-based timed stations with feedback across the 3 domains. Human sessions add interruption and unfamiliar phrasing. GK's Notes 3.0 is available free for clinical reference, and the six-week preparation plan supplies a dated structure.

Before paying for extra Manchester weeks, complete a timed circuit and classify repeated errors by domain. If an unsafe plan or unclear explanation keeps returning, more targeted speaking practice in Turkey may be better value than an early move.

Questions candidates actually ask

Can you prepare for PLAB 2 in Turkey?

Yes. Candidates can self-study in Turkey, practise online or attend a local UK-style PLAB 2 course before travelling. The course phase can happen without an early UK trip, but the exam itself still requires travel to Manchester.

Is the PLAB 2 exam held in Turkey?

No. PLAB 1 has international test centres, but PLAB 2 is delivered only at the GMC clinical assessment centres in Manchester. A course advertised in Turkey is preparation for the exam, not a Turkish PLAB 2 sitting.

Is PLAB worth it compared to TUS?

PLAB can be worth it for a doctor who wants English-based practice, accepts an NHS service job before specialty training and can fund the route without relying on quick UK training entry. TUS is the stronger choice for someone who wants to remain near family and compete directly for a Turkish specialty place. Current TUS numbers should be checked with ÖSYM, while the UK's 2026 prioritisation rules must be included in any PLAB decision.
