The work both routes must cover
PLAB 2 consists of 16 scenarios lasting eight minutes each. The GMC assesses every scenario across three domains: data gathering, technical and assessment skills; clinical management skills; and interpersonal skills. Examiners also make a global judgement for each station, and the GMC uses those judgements in its standard-setting process. You must gather relevant information, reach a safe clinical plan and communicate effectively within eight minutes. Where you learnt those skills is not part of the score. Silent study can improve knowledge, but it cannot reveal a rushed explanation, a missed cue or a management plan that overruns. Both routes need spoken practice under time pressure.
An academy is one way to arrange that work. There is no verified comparison showing that attendance itself produces a higher pass rate than organised self-study.
What an academy provides
A scheduled day creates opportunities to speak, be interrupted, make an error and try again. Tutor or peer feedback may expose missing clinical information, unsafe management or ineffective communication that private reading hides. Before paying, ask how much individual speaking time and feedback the timetable includes in practice.
Academies may organise teaching around current case discussions and recall-informed themes. A recall is not an official GMC syllabus or a prediction of the next 16 scenarios. Common station types and current UK management still need to be practised without relying on one remembered script.

On matching low estimates and matching high estimates, the academy route adds about £1,380 to £3,110. The visa application and international flight are excluded because both routes require them and the amounts vary by circumstances and booking date. Longer preparation at home may still carry costs for a case bank, internet access or a mock, but it does not create 14 extra Manchester nights.
Even the low estimated difference of £1,380 exceeds the £1,036 exam fee. Before buying the course, identify what the fee adds to your current plan, such as a stated amount of daily speaking time with individual correction. Ask the provider to confirm that amount.
When the extra structure may help
An academy may help if you know the material but have not been able to arrange regular spoken practice. A fixed timetable can remove some of the scheduling work, provided it includes enough time for you to speak and receive specific feedback.
It may also help when internet quality makes eight-minute video or voice stations unreliable. Check whether the course uses tutors, peers or both for role-play, and how feedback differs between them.
If you will be in Manchester for 2 to 6 weeks anyway, some accommodation costs exist in both options. Compare the added course and living costs with what you would have spent during that same period.
For a second attempt, use the previous GMC feedback when deciding. Repeated problems with listening, consultation structure or timing call for a different plan from incorrect diagnosis or unsafe management. - Is feedback given after every station, and does it separately cover data gathering, clinical management and interpersonal skills? General praise is less useful than one repairable error in each of the three domains.
- Who teaches the current batch, and when did each tutor pass PLAB 2 or last work with its present format? A famous academy name does not answer who will be in the room for 1 to 4 weeks.
- How many full 16-station mocks are included, who marks them and what written report is provided? The answer should distinguish a timed circuit from classroom case discussion.
- What are the cancellation, transfer and refund terms in writing? Candidates should ask what happens after a visa delay, illness or exam-date change before paying a deposit.
- Are accommodation introductions optional, and what exactly is included in the quoted price? Rent, deposits, utilities, meals and transport should appear as separate £ amounts.
The advertised course duration does not reveal how much you will practise. Ask for the daily speaking time and the form of domain-based correction in writing, along with the refund and accommodation terms.
