The Manchester trip accounts for much of the cost of taking PLAB from India. In 2026, a budget of about ₹6 lakh to ₹9 lakh covers the two exams, preparation, a visitor visa and one UK trip. You can sit PLAB 1 in India; PLAB 2 is available only in Manchester. Passing the exams can lead to GMC registration, but it does not promise an NHS job or a UK specialty training place.
These figures use an illustrative rate of approximately ₹105 per pound, mid-2026. Fixed fees are converted directly. Flights, preparation and living costs are planning allowances, not official prices.
| Item | 2026 planning figure | Illustrative INR |
|---|---|---|
| PLAB 1 fee | £283 | ₹29,715 |
| PLAB 2 fee from 1 April 2026 | £1,036 | ₹1,08,780 |
| Six-month Standard Visitor visa from 8 April 2026 | £135 | ₹14,175 |
| English test, documents and administration | Planning allowance | ₹35,000 to ₹55,000 |
| Return flight from India | Planning allowance | ₹65,000 to ₹1,00,000 |
| Manchester accommodation, food and local travel for 3 to 6 weeks | Planning allowance | ₹2,20,000 to ₹3,90,000 |
| PLAB 2 preparation | Planning allowance | ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 |
| Card charges, exchange movement and contingency | Planning allowance | ₹50,000 to ₹80,000 |
| Estimated total | Rounded range | ₹6,00,000 to ₹9,00,000 |
The lower end assumes a short stay, shared accommodation and disciplined self-study. The upper end allows six weeks in Manchester, paid teaching and a larger rupee buffer. If you are using borrowed money, budget from the upper half: a ₹2 movement in GBP/INR changes £5,000 of spending by ₹10,000 before any card markup.
Why Manchester determines the budget
PLAB 1 is delivered internationally, and you can choose an available Indian test centre when booking. PLAB 2 is delivered only in Manchester. There is no PLAB 2 centre in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or any other Indian city. A stay of about 3 to 6 weeks is common in the budget used here, though your preparation and travel plans may differ. After passing PLAB 1, you book PLAB 2 through GMC Online and can then apply under the Standard Visitor route. The exam booking confirmation is central to that application. Read the current PLAB 2 visa process before paying for non-refundable flights.
Manchester itself has two GMC assessment centres with similar addresses, so the venue on the booking confirmation matters. A three-week stay may suit a doctor who has already completed months of spoken practice in India. Six weeks buys more time for local mocks and adjustment, but it also adds accommodation and lost Indian earnings to the ₹6 lakh to ₹9 lakh calculation.
Choosing between PLAB and NEET-PG
PLAB and NEET-PG lead to different outcomes. NEET-PG ranks an Indian graduate for a postgraduate seat, with competition, fees, stipends and service bonds that differ by state and institution. PLAB tests whether an overseas graduate meets the standard for UK registration. A pass does not award a specialty, an NHS post or a training number. The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 also changed access to UK training. In the 2026 CT1 and ST1 cycle, NHS England reported that 98% of posts went to priority candidates, while non-prioritised acceptances fell from 2,168 to 163. The full guide to IMG training prioritisation explains who counted as priority and why the effect moves earlier in recruitment from 2027.
The current GOV.UK national-pay-scale table lists FY1-equivalent pay at £36,616 in England, £34,500 in Scotland, £33,307 in Wales and £29,566 in Northern Ireland, on a 40-hour reference week. An NHS salary can begin in a service post, while an Indian postgraduate stipend depends on the institution and state. Earning at an FY-equivalent level is not the same as holding an FY training post. Service employment and specialty training are separate competitions. If your priority is an Indian specialty place and remaining close to family, NEET-PG addresses that goal directly. PLAB may fit if you can fund ₹6 lakh to ₹9 lakh, are willing to apply widely for NHS service work and do not depend on receiving a UK training number within 12 months. The 163 non-prioritised acceptances show why immediate GP or IMT entry cannot be assumed in a 2026 PLAB budget.
Those 163 acceptances settle one point: immediate UK training is no longer a safe assumption.
If you want formal specialty training abroad but would reject UK service work, compare PLAB with other destinations before paying. Include each regulator's exams, supervised-practice requirements and employment rights alongside the exam fee quoted in rupees. The two PLAB exam fees total £1,319, but registration and employment are separate steps and later mobility has its own conditions.
Money mechanics from India
GMC exam fees are charged in pounds. An Indian card therefore needs international online transactions enabled, enough available limit for the £1,036 PLAB 2 payment, and room for the issuer's foreign-exchange markup and tax treatment. A declined payment during a booking attempt can cost time, so check the card settings and limit before selecting a PLAB 2 place. If you intend to borrow, ask the lender in writing whether the exam, visa and preparation costs are eligible before making a payment.
The relevant number is the final rupee debit. For a £1,036 GMC charge, a card's conversion rate and issuer fee can produce a different statement amount from the ₹1,08,780 table conversion. The illustrative ₹105 rate is a planning tool, so an Indian candidate should compare the card's quoted INR amount before confirming payment and preserve the GMC receipt for any later loan or tax documentation.
The safest budget separates fixed payments from reversible choices. The £283 PLAB 1 fee and £1,036 PLAB 2 fee are fixed GMC charges from 1 April 2026. A six-week academy stay, private Manchester room or flexible flight is a choice. Keeping at least ₹50,000 outside the core budget protects against card charges, an exchange movement or a changed return date.
Ordering the steps after MBBS
You can use final year and internship for the required English test, document checks and PLAB 1 knowledge preparation, but booking depends on when your eligibility evidence becomes available. Watch the dates shown in GMC Online rather than relying on an academy's prediction. The English result and acceptable documents come before exam eligibility, the PLAB 1 pass comes before PLAB 2 booking, and a confirmed Manchester date gives the visitor application its exam evidence. Reversing that order can leave you with a paid academy place or flight but no exam date.
PLAB 1 can be prepared for and taken in India. Once the pass is recorded, GMC rules require PLAB 2 to be passed within two years of the PLAB 1 pass. Use that deadline when choosing a PLAB 2 date.
Begin spoken PLAB 2 work in India before the Manchester trip. Actual places may not match a private course calendar, so do not assume a fixed waiting time. A six-week PLAB 2 preparation plan can organise the final timed phase once the exam date is known.
Indian registration needs its own track. A graduate preserving Indian registration, or dealing with an FMGE-related position, should check the National Medical Commission's current rules directly before arranging internship or overseas dates. NMC specifics sit outside this PLAB timeline, and an assumption copied from a 2024 forum post can disrupt both registrations.
After the pass
After PLAB 2, the next formal step is an application for GMC registration, not automatic employment. The 2026 plan should assume a service-job search first, using terms such as locally employed doctor, clinical fellow, trust grade and SHO equivalent. An Indian doctor who has budgeted only until the result email has stopped the financial plan too early.
The employment warning is measurable. In a BMA survey conducted from 21 to 28 July 2025, 34% of 4,401 resident doctors had no substantive job or regular locum work lined up for August, although the BMA did not publish an IMG-specific breakdown. The GMC's 2025 workforce reporting found that only 13% of the 2024 IMG PLAB joiner cohort had connected to a designated body within six months, down from 20% for the 2023 cohort. A designated-body connection is an employment indicator, not a perfect unemployment measure, but 13% is too low to justify promises of a quick first job.
UK registration can still create value beyond the first NHS post. After the required UK experience, it can support registration routes to Australia and New Zealand, and accepted UK specialist qualifications may later enter Australia's expedited specialist process. The Australia and New Zealand registration guide sets out the experience and supervision conditions. For an Indian graduate, that optionality is why the Prioritisation Act changed PLAB's payoff timeline more than its basic economics.
What Indian candidates ask most
A UK clinical attachment is not required before PLAB 2. The GMC exam assesses performance in timed clinical scenarios, not whether a candidate has shadowed in an NHS trust. An attachment may later provide exposure to NHS systems and material for job applications, but adding four unpaid weeks in Britain solely to become eligible for PLAB 2 wastes money because no such eligibility rule exists.
An academy is also optional. The academy versus self-study guide compares the cost with the actual benefits: timetable, speaking partners, feedback and local mocks. An Indian doctor with a reliable study partner, current clinical references and daily spoken practice can prepare at home, then use a shorter Manchester stay. A doctor who repeatedly avoids live practice may rationally pay for structure.
The minimum test for an India-based self-study plan is observable performance, not completed notes. Before flying, the candidate should be able to complete 16 timed scenarios, review all three GMC domains and repeat weak stations without a memorised recall script. That full mock should happen before the visa-funded Manchester weeks, because repairing a consistent eight-minute communication problem in India is far cheaper than extending UK accommodation by another fortnight.
Questions candidates actually ask
How much does PLAB cost in Indian rupees?
A 2026 planning range from India is about ₹6 lakh to ₹9 lakh, including both PLAB fees, the visitor visa, a return flight, preparation and a three to six-week Manchester stay. It uses an illustrative rate of approximately ₹105 per pound in mid-2026, so the actual rupee cost changes with the exchange rate and personal choices.
Can PLAB 2 be taken in India?
No. PLAB 1 is available at international test centres, including India, but PLAB 2 is delivered only in Manchester in the UK. An Indian candidate therefore needs one UK trip for PLAB 2.
Is PLAB easier than NEET-PG?
The exams select for different outcomes, so easier is the wrong comparison. NEET-PG ranks candidates for Indian postgraduate seats, while PLAB tests readiness for UK registration and does not guarantee either an NHS job or a specialty training place.
Is clinical attachment required before PLAB 2?
No. A UK clinical attachment is not required to take PLAB 2, and an Indian doctor can prepare through timed spoken stations from home. An attachment may later provide NHS exposure for job applications, but it is separate from PLAB 2 eligibility.
