PLAB 2 from Egypt: budget, imtiaz timing and the UK trip

Published by GK's PLAB 2 Study Centre · Last fact-check: 4 August 2026

For an Egyptian graduate, the first scheduling question is how PLAB fits around imtiaz and any later service obligation. The official charges can be calculated more easily: at an illustrative rate of approximately E£65 per pound, mid-2026, the £283 PLAB 1 fee, £1,036 PLAB 2 fee and £135 visitor visa total about E£94,510. PLAB 1 is available in Egypt through international centres, but PLAB 2 is delivered only in Manchester. Flights, accommodation and preparation depend on your dates and choices.

Item Dated charge or allowance Illustrative EGP amount
PLAB 1 fee from 1 April 2026 £283 E£18,395
PLAB 2 fee from 1 April 2026 £1,036 E£67,340
Standard Visitor visa from 8 April 2026 £135 E£8,775
Flights, stay, preparation and reserve Use current quotes Not fixed

The three official charges total £1,454, or about E£94,510 at the stated rate. Build the rest from a live flight quote, the accommodation you intend to book, preparation costs and a currency reserve. The GMC lists international PLAB 1 locations by booking availability, so confirm the Egyptian centre and intended diet in the GMC account. PLAB 2 has two Manchester centres, at 3 Hardman Square and 3 Hardman Street. Check the address on your booking confirmation.

Timing around imtiaz

PLAB 1 preparation can run alongside imtiaz rotations because the written exam does not require a Manchester stay. Whether you sit it during imtiaz depends on your eligibility, rota and study time. PLAB 2 needs spoken preparation and a UK trip, so its timing should be chosen separately rather than assumed from another doctor's sequence.

Completing imtiaz first gives an Egyptian doctor more repeated exposure to assessment, escalation, prescribing and conversations with relatives before the Manchester exam. The current GMC format is 16 scenarios of 8 minutes each, so clinical maturity has to appear quickly in both management and speech. It also allows the doctor to clarify the position on full Egyptian registration before spending at least £1,036 on the clinical exam.

Mandatory service and takleef considerations exist, but their application can vary. No candidate should rely on a facmedicine thread, an academy tutor or an older colleague for a Ministry procedure that affects travel or registration. The current Ministry rules and the doctor's own status should be checked directly before fixing a PLAB 2 date, taking leave or changing the imtiaz sequence.

Funding in a controlled-currency economy

Converting £1,454 at E£65 covers only the official charges. Exam fees are taken in sterling while income and family savings are usually held in EGP, and the flight and Manchester costs arrive at different dates. Give each pound payment its own funding date, exchange-rate record and reserve instead of relying on one fixed EGP total. Before selecting a PLAB 2 place, the paying card must be enabled for international online transactions and its limit must cover a single £1,036 charge plus any issuer conversion cost. A successful domestic EGP payment proves neither point. Limits and activation can change, so confirm the current position directly and arrange any lawful backup with the cardholder's permission.

Payment friction shows up in GK's PLAB 2 Study Centre's own data, but the Egyptian sample is too small for a percentage or issuer claim. The useful response is operational: test international access early, keep fee receipts and save the final EGP debit shown on the statement. That statement amount, rather than E£67,340 from an illustrative mid-2026 rate, is the real PLAB 2 cost.

Travel funding also needs a paper trail. Currency exchange receipts, card statements and bookings should account for the 3 to 6 week stay without unexplained transfers. Where parents or another relative provide support, the visa file should identify the sponsor, show the relationship, explain the amount and evidence where the money came from. The PLAB 2 visa guide sets out that sponsorship sequence in detail.

The visa file from Egypt

GOV.UK permits a visit of up to 6 months to take PLAB, supported by the GMC letter. The booking explains the purpose of the trip. The rest of the file must show how the stay will be paid for and why the applicant will return to Egypt.

An expensive trip does not make the £135 application stronger. Every document still needs to support the same dates and purpose.

Hospital employment or imtiaz records can establish the doctor's current professional position, approved leave where relevant and the expected return to Egypt. Family ties should be evidenced only when they are real and relevant. Six months of statements can show ordinary income and spending more clearly than a large late deposit, and any family-funded credit should match the sponsorship explanation. The application, GMC booking, accommodation dates and funding account must tell one consistent story. Cairo and Alexandria visa application centres may provide the biometric route, but live appointment and service arrangements should be checked before travel is booked. There is no verified Egypt-specific approval probability in the supplied evidence, so a claimed percentage from an agent or social post should carry no weight.

PLAB against the alternatives Egyptians weigh

Egyptian doctors may compare PLAB with direct Gulf licensing, European language routes and USMLE. Direct Gulf entry removes the £1,036 Manchester exam and the NHS stage, but eligibility and employment depend on the regulator and market in the intended country.

GMC registration followed by substantive UK clinical experience may affect the licensure tier or job profile available later in parts of the Gulf. The treatment differs by regulator and can change, so the guide to where GMC registration helps separates confirmed pathways from reported concessions. Check the current Gulf rules before treating UK experience as an advantage.

European routes can avoid the Manchester-only clinical exam, but they may demand years of language investment before independent patient communication and registration become feasible. For an Egyptian doctor already practising medical English, PLAB turns that existing language investment into a 16-scenario clinical assessment. A doctor committed to German, French or another national system should treat that country as the destination, rather than use PLAB as a temporary holding plan.

USMLE asks for more upfront examination spending and a competitive Match. Published 2026 charges put the ECFMG application and two Steps sat outside the US and Canada at about $2,415, subject to confirmation on the official USMLE application page; the ECFMG application fee was $580 from 1 June 2026.

NRMP reported a 56.4% PGY-1 match rate for active non-US-citizen IMGs in 2026, falling to 54.4% for visa-requiring IMGs. The PLAB, USMLE and AMC comparison keeps those native-currency costs separate.

PLAB followed by NHS service and a later Gulf application is one possible sequence, but the UK phase may last several years. GMC registration alone is not a Gulf exemption; current regulator checks, primary-source verification and post-internship experience still matter.

How UK training changed in 2026

The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 came into force on 6 March 2026, changing allocation of UK Foundation and specialty training posts for Egyptian and other non-priority applicants. It did not close PLAB or GMC registration, but the full Prioritisation Act guide explains the defined priority groups, offer-stage operation in 2026 and earlier recruitment-stage operation from 2027.

The first outcome was severe for a doctor expecting immediate training. NHS England reported that priority candidates received 98% of 2026 CT1 and ST1 posts, up from 72% in 2025, while non-prioritised acceptances fell from 2,168 to 163. Do not build a repayment plan around receiving a specialty post.

After PLAB and GMC registration, you can apply for trust grade, clinical fellow or other locally employed service posts and decide later whether to pursue training. None is guaranteed by a PLAB 2 pass, so keep enough reserve to avoid an open-ended UK stay while applying. The 2026 figure of 163 non-prioritised acceptances should remain part of any training calculation.

Preparing from Egypt

Use a small study group only if everyone gets repeated 8-minute stations and direct spoken correction. Reading cases in a large recall group does not test how you respond under time.

Egypt is 2 hours ahead of the UK when Britain uses GMT and 1 hour ahead during British Summer Time. A 7 pm UK practice therefore starts at 8 pm or 9 pm in Egypt, which suits evening sessions around imtiaz and hospital rotas. The 6-week PLAB 2 preparation plan can organise the final timed phase before Manchester.

GK's Notes 3.0 is available free for Egypt-based clinical revision.

AI patient practice at GK's PLAB 2 Study Centre provides voice-based timed stations with feedback across the 3 PLAB 2 domains.

Before committing to several weeks of Manchester rent, complete a full 16-scenario circuit from Egypt under the GMC's 8-minute timing. Use the feedback to identify whether the remaining work is clinical management, data gathering or interpersonal skill, then decide whether extra Manchester teaching is worth paying for in pounds.

Questions candidates actually ask

How much does PLAB cost from Egypt?

At an illustrative rate of approximately E£65 per pound in mid-2026, PLAB 1, PLAB 2 and the Standard Visitor visa total about E£94,510. Flights, accommodation, preparation and exchange costs must be added using current quotes for your own dates.

Should Egyptians do PLAB during or after imtiaz?

PLAB 1 preparation can run alongside imtiaz, while the timing of PLAB 2 depends on your clinical readiness, registration position and any takleef obligations. Check the current Ministry rules and your own status directly before changing the sequence or booking Manchester.

Is PLAB better than Gulf licensing for Egyptian doctors?

PLAB leads towards GMC registration and possible NHS experience, while direct Gulf licensing removes the UK exam and employment stage. Neither route guarantees a job. Compare the current eligibility, experience and employment rules for the intended Gulf country before choosing.
