PLAB 2 from Nigeria: costs and pound payments

Published by GK's PLAB 2 Study Centre · Last fact-check: 4 August 2026

The £1,036 PLAB 2 payment is large enough to fail if a Nigerian card's international setting or limit has not been checked. It is also only one part of the cost. Using an illustrative rate of approximately ₦2,000 per pound, mid-2026, the full 2026 budget used here is approximately ₦7m to ₦11m.

PLAB 1 can be sat in Nigeria when Lagos is available in the relevant booking window. PLAB 2 is delivered only in Manchester. The fixed exam and visa charges are about ₦2.908m at the stated rate; flights, the Manchester stay and preparation account for the rest of the estimate.

Item Dated charge or allowance Illustrative naira amount
PLAB 1 fee from 1 April 2026 £283 ₦566,000
PLAB 2 fee from 1 April 2026 £1,036 ₦2,072,000
Six-month Standard Visitor visa from 8 April 2026 £135 ₦270,000
Flights, Manchester stay, preparation and contingency Combined planning allowance ₦4.1m to ₦8.1m
Estimated total Rounded range ₦7m to ₦11m

The £1,454 official total converts to ₦2,908,000 at the stated rate. The ₦4.1m to ₦8.1m balance is a combined planning allowance, not an official tariff or a live flight quote. A shorter shared stay and Nigeria-based preparation push the total towards ₦7m. A longer Manchester stay, paid teaching and a larger currency reserve push it towards ₦11m.

GMC location guidance lists PLAB 1 countries and available cities, so Lagos must be checked for the intended diet rather than assumed from an older candidate's booking. PLAB 2 remains Manchester-only. Its two centres have near-identical Hardman Square and Hardman Street addresses, which makes the venue on the GMC confirmation more reliable than a study-group message.

Preparing the pound payment

For a Nigerian candidate, the weakest operational link is often the pound payment rather than the exam booking itself. Payment records from this platform over 12 months show that 38.9% of Nigerian card attempts failed, compared with 5.3% of UK attempts. These were attempts at this platform's checkout, not all Nigerian cards and not the GMC checkout, but a failure rate more than 7 times the UK figure is too large to dismiss.

A card used successfully for a naira purchase has not yet proved that it can clear a £1,036 international online transaction. A domiciliary USD or GBP account can provide a foreign-currency payment route where the attached card supports international e-commerce. A bank-issued dollar card is another option when international use is active and the available limit covers the charge plus conversion costs. A trusted relative's card abroad can be a lawful backup with the cardholder's permission. Issuer settings, limits and foreign-currency access can change, so confirm the current position directly with the bank.

The card, limit and international activation should be confirmed before a PLAB 2 place is selected. Payment should also be attempted well before any deadline, leaving time to contact the issuer or use the prepared backup. A failed card does not make the GMC's £1,036 fee smaller, extend the candidate's eligibility or hold a place indefinitely. The receipt and final naira debit should be saved because the statement amount, rather than the illustrative ₦2,072,000 conversion, is the real cost.

MDCN, housemanship and timing

For most Nigerian graduates, finishing housemanship before PLAB 2 is the stronger sequence.

Completion protects the path to MDCN full registration and gives the doctor repeated exposure to sick patients, prioritisation, prescribing, escalation and difficult conversations. Those are the clinical habits that an eight-minute PLAB 2 station tests under time pressure.

The common alternative is to pursue PLAB early to avoid a longer housemanship or NYSC-era delay. Speed has value when the whole plan may cost ₦7m to ₦11m, but skipping a foundational Nigerian work period can leave less clinical evidence for a visitor application, less recent experience for NHS applications and fewer safe habits to draw on in spoken stations. The better compromise is often PLAB 1 preparation during housemanship, followed by PLAB 2 preparation after the core clinical year has been completed.

MDCN and NYSC procedures should not be taken from an older WhatsApp message or another doctor's sequence. A candidate considering delayed housemanship, interrupted service or overseas travel should check the current requirements directly with MDCN and the relevant NYSC channel before acting. The PLAB timetable does not override Nigerian registration or service rules.

There is also a GMC clock. After passing PLAB 1, a candidate must pass PLAB 2 within two years of the PLAB 1 pass date. That two-year limit should shape the Nigerian housemanship and travel plan, but it is not a sound reason to abandon housemanship without checking the consequences.

The visa file from Nigeria

A Nigerian PLAB 2 visitor file needs three coherent legs: a permitted exam purpose, enough accessible money for the trip and credible reasons to leave the UK. GOV.UK permits a visit of up to six months to take PLAB or an OSCE, with the GMC letter supporting the purpose. The booking date, Manchester accommodation and intended return should tell the same story across the application and evidence. The funds leg needs particular care because a Nigerian salary arrives in naira while the exam, flight and much of the stay are priced against pounds. Six months of consistent statements should show normal income and spending, not a balance assembled just before submission. Every large credit needs a document trail and a plain explanation. A sponsor should be identified, the relationship shown and the source and availability of the sponsor's money evidenced.

There is no verified Nigeria-specific refusal rate in the supplied research, so nationality odds should not drive the application. Evidence quality should. An employment letter can state the Nigerian post, salary, approved leave and expected return date. Genuine housemanship or medical employment records can support the same account, while family or property evidence should be used only where it accurately explains an ongoing tie.

Candidates using a visa application centre in Lagos or Abuja should allow time and naira for travel, biometrics and document preparation, then verify the live appointment arrangements before setting the itinerary. No old centre address or forum processing estimate should control a 2026 application. The PLAB 2 visa guide explains the evidence sequence, sponsorship and refusal repair in more detail.

What the 2026 training rules change

The UK's training position became materially harder on 6 March 2026, when the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 came into force. The Act did not close PLAB, GMC registration or NHS service jobs to Nigerians. It did, however, give priority in Foundation and specialty training allocation to defined groups, and most doctors applying directly from Nigeria will not qualify unless their individual status places them in one of those groups.

The first results were severe. NHS England reported for 2026 CT1 and ST1 recruitment that 98% of posts went to priority candidates, up from 72% in 2025. Non-prioritised acceptances fell from 2,168 to 163. For a Nigerian doctor spending ₦7m to ₦11m, an immediate specialty training post is therefore an unsafe financial assumption.

Plan for service work before training: obtain GMC registration, compete for trust grade, clinical fellow or other locally employed doctor posts, then reassess training after gaining NHS experience. The full guide to the Prioritisation Act explains the statutory groups and the move from offer-stage priority in 2026 to earlier recruitment stages from 2027. None of these service posts is guaranteed by a PLAB pass, and the 163 non-prioritised acceptances cannot support a promise of quick training entry.

There is later optionality outside the UK. PLAB plus the required UK experience can support a route towards Australian registration, but the move is not automatic and it should not rescue a weak first-job budget. The Australia and New Zealand registration guide explains the 12 months of UK experience required for Australia's Competent Authority Pathway and New Zealand's five-year PLAB timing rule.

Preparing from Nigeria

If power or mobile data interrupts live practice, download core material before the session and schedule spoken work for the hours that are most reliable for you. The six-week preparation plan can supply the final timed block, but begin earlier if interrupted sessions regularly prevent a full circuit.

An in-person or online group is useful only if each doctor completes repeated eight-minute stations and receives direct feedback. The academy versus self-study guide helps you decide whether a paid Manchester course adds enough correction to justify extra pounds and accommodation.

West Africa Time is UTC+1 throughout the year. Nigeria is one hour ahead of the UK while Britain uses GMT, then shares the same clock while Britain uses British Summer Time. That alignment makes UK-based evening sessions practical without the four-hour or five-hour gap faced by some other PLAB markets.

Notes still need to become speech. Before buying a Manchester flight, a Nigerian candidate should complete at least one full 16-station timed circuit with no pause for searching, then identify whether clinical management, data gathering or interpersonal skill is repeatedly weak. That test costs time and data, but it is cheaper than discovering the same problem after paying £1,036 and moving into Manchester accommodation.

After the pass

A PLAB 2 pass permits the next GMC registration steps. It does not create an NHS contract. GMC workforce reporting published in 2025 found that only 13% of the 2024 IMG PLAB joiner cohort had connected to a designated body within six months of first registration, down from 20% for the 2023 cohort. A designated-body connection is an employment indicator, not a direct unemployment count, because some doctors may not yet have moved to the UK or started practice. That 13% figure makes a post-pass reserve necessary for a Nigerian doctor. The budget should cover applications, verification, travel decisions and several months without UK earnings rather than ending on the exam date. Remaining in a Nigerian clinical post during early applications can reduce pressure to accept poor terms or fund an open-ended UK stay from naira savings.

The first job should be judged as a service post, even when its title includes SHO, trust grade or clinical fellow. It may provide NHS experience and income, but it should not be presented to family as a guaranteed training number. From 2027, statutory priority operates earlier in specialty recruitment, so a service post may be a longer phase than candidates in the earlier japa wave expected.

First-year remittance promises should also wait. UK rent, deposits, transport, professional fees and any repayment of the ₦7m to ₦11m PLAB budget come before a stable naira transfer can be calculated. A safer commitment is made only after the first contract, city and monthly costs are known, with an emergency reserve kept in pounds rather than converted for an early remittance target.

Questions candidates actually ask

How much is PLAB in naira?

At an illustrative rate of approximately ₦2,000 per pound in mid-2026, PLAB 1, PLAB 2 and the visitor visa total about ₦2.908m. The full planning range is approximately ₦7m to ₦11m after flights, a Manchester stay and preparation are included.

Can I pay GMC fees with a Nigerian card?

A Nigerian card can work if international online payments are active and its limit covers the pound charge. Payment records from this platform show a 38.9% failure rate for Nigerian card attempts over 12 months, compared with 5.3% for UK attempts, so the card should be confirmed early and a lawful backup should be ready.

Should I finish housemanship before PLAB?

Usually, yes. Completing housemanship supports the path to MDCN full registration and gives a doctor more of the clinical maturity that PLAB 2 stations reward, but current MDCN and NYSC requirements should be checked directly before changing the sequence.
